99 Names Project

99 Names of Allah in 99 Days Weekly Summary

99 names of Allah will try to be understood 99 days before Ramadan through the project started by Jenny Molendyk Divleli with the hashtag #99namesproject2022. The goal of the project shared by Jenny Molendyk on her Instagram account is to understand, learn and repeat one of the names of Allah each day until Ramadan. Showing the effort is so meaningful both in terms of getting together as a family in such an event and teaching children the beautiful names of Allah.

Alhamdulillah, we have reached lots of people on this path and we have already completed the first week of the process. We hope the week was beneficial for everyone. So, let’s look at what we did during the week.

99 Names of Allah in 99 Days Weekly Summary, we studied the names of Allah, Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem, Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, Al-Mu’min respectively, starting with you on Tuesday. For those who missed some days or want to repeat them, we have compiled the works that we have worked on this week. Then we can start.

Day 1: Allah

Meaning: The one and only God in Islam.

Allah is the name of the God Almighty in the Arabic Language. Allah is the personal name of God. The word Allah is never used for any other being or thing. The names for God found in other languages are all attributive or descriptive and are often used in the plural, but the word ‘Allah’ is never used in the plural. This is because Islam advocates the belief in the absolute unity of God. In the absence of a parallel word in the English language, the original name ‘Allah’ has been retained throughout the translation.

Say, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call – to Him belong the best names.” And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

Surah Al-ısra Ayat 110 (17:110 Quran).

The One who is Free from all imperfections and deficiencies because of the Perfection of His Being, of His Attributes and His Actions (Ibn Kathir). He keeps His creations safe from any injustice on His part.

From the root s-l-m has the following classical Arabic connotations: to be peaceful, quiet, tranquil, content, friendly, reconciled, to be free from imperfections, free of faults, complete, whole, sound, to be safe, secure, well, healthy, and prosperous. We know from our greeting one another with assalamualaikum, that we are sending peace upon the receiver. As-Salam is referring to the attribute of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ as the source of this peace.

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

“And peace upon the messengers.” But remember the originator of such peace is Allah. By turning to Him by this name As-Salam, seeking his guidance, we hope to attain the final destination in the home of Salam (Jannah or paradise).

 Surah as-Saffat verse 181.
